Second-Half Surge by Nation’s Leading Scorer Drops Otero in Final Non-Conference Matchup

LA JUNTA, Colo. — Otero College held the nation’s leading scorer in check for one half, but a commanding second-half surge by Laramie County proved decisive in a 78-60 Rattlers loss on Saturday.

Otero controlled much of the early action in the first half, building and maintaining a lead that stretched as high as seven points through the first 17 minutes of the contest. Both defenses dictated the opening 20 minutes, with each side holding the other below 40 percent shooting and points coming at a premium.

Despite Otero’s strong start, Laramie County closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 26-22 advantage into the locker room. The low-scoring first half reflected the Rattlers’ effort on the glass and in the passing lanes, as Otero disrupted rhythm, contested shots and prevented the high scoring Eagles from finding their offensive rythem.

The second half, however, belonged to LCCC and its talented trio. Coulter erupted for 25 points after halftime to finish with a game-high 32, igniting an offense that shot 64 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes. Elgizawy and Phillips also chipped in 19 second half points combined to boost the Eagles. Laramie County used a pivotal 9-0 run midway through the second half to turn a tight contest into a commanding advantage, stretching the margin and keeping Otero in chase mode the rest of the way.

Otero continued to battle on the interior and the offensive glass, but the efficiency gap proved too much to overcome. The Rattlers finished with 60 points, unable to match the Golden Eagles’ second-half scoring pace once LCCC’s perimeter attack found its rhythm and began converting at a high rate from multiple spots on the floor.

Sophomore guard Ray Gasaway led Otero with a well-rounded performance, posting 12 points, six total rebounds and an impressive five offensive boards while adding two steals. His work on the glass created second-chance opportunities that helped the Rattlers build their early lead and compete down the stretch. Sophomore center Sam Webb added nine points and seven rebounds, providing a steady interior presence at both ends.

Despite the final margin, Otero’s first-half defensive effort and individual performances from Gasaway and Webb highlighted the team’s ability to compete with one of the top scoring teams in the region. The Rattlers will look to build on the opening 20 minutes and their rebounding efforts as they begin conference play this week with road contests at McCook and North Platte.
