LA JUNTA, Colo. — An impressive defensive performance and a decisive second-half surge sparked by three straight 3's propelled the Otero College Rattlers to a 74-59 win over Western Wyoming on Monday night, securing Otero’s first victory of the season.
In a tight game with a single-digit advantage after halftime, Otero broke the game open when Freshman Noah Banks converted a three-point play in the lane, absorbing contact and finishing through a foul. On the next two trips, the Rattlers capitalized on their momentum from beyond the arc, as Banks buried a 3-pointer and freshman wing Kaylan Graham followed with a 3 of his own. The quick burst turned a manageable margin into a commanding lead that Western Wyoming never recovered from.
Banks led all Otero scorers with 18 points and added four rebounds, anchoring the offense during key stretches. Graham delivered one of the most complete performances of the night, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists on an efficient 5-for-7 shooting from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. He also registered four steals, helping set the tone for Otero’s defensive pressure.
Sophomore forward Nedum Chiadika provided a strong interior presence, nearly posting a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds while adding two steals. His work on the glass was central to Otero’s ability to close out possessions and generate second-chance opportunities. Overall, the Rattlers outrebounded Western Wyoming 37-32 and converted their effort on the boards into 14 second-chance points.
Defensively, Otero controlled the game by disrupting Western Wyoming’s rhythm. The Rattlers held WWCC to 40% shooting from the field and just 22% from beyond the arc. Their ball pressure forced 16 turnovers, which Otero turned into 19 points, repeatedly punishing Western Wyoming’s mistakes on the other end.
Otero’s strong start defensively laid the groundwork for the win. The Rattlers used efficient first-half shooting to establish a 42-33 halftime lead, moving the ball and finding quality looks both at the rim and from deep. When Western Wyoming attempted to chip away after the break, Otero’s combination of timely shot-making and disciplined half-court defense kept the visitors at arm’s length.
With the 74-59 victory, Otero not only earned its first win of the year but also showcased a balanced formula built on defense, rebounding and shared scoring. The performance from Banks, Graham and Chiadika highlighted the Rattlers’ potential as the team looks to build on Monday’s result in the games ahead.
