Rattlers Face Setback Against McCook

In a challenging season finale at the Event Center on March 1, Otero College's Women's Basketball team, the Rattlers, fell short against McCook Community College Indians with a final score of 61-50 in a Region 9 basketball game. Despite a valiant effort, the Rattlers couldn't overcome the Indians, thus ending their regular season on a subdued note.

The match began with McCook taking an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead with a slight 4-point advantage. The Rattlers, led by Kendra Byrd who scored a team-high 18 points, struggled to close the gap, trailing 28-24 by halftime. Byrd's performance, including impactful three-pointers, highlighted her critical role in Otero's strategy. Dayshanay Bruner also contributed significantly, putting up 8 points.

Throughout the game, the Indians maintained control, extending their lead in the subsequent quarters. By the third period, McCook had increased their lead to 12 points, eventually sealing the game at 61-50. Otero's defense was able to create havoc with Keke Smith and Ariadna Pastor with 4 steals each, showed moments of potential disruption, yet it wasn't enough to overcome the offensive mistakes made by the Lady Rattlers.

Otero College Coach Kyle Herring reflected on the game with a hopeful outlook despite the loss, stating, "Not the way we wanted to end the regular season but I saw some things today that give me a bit of hope going into the post-season. We played hard today. We played together today. We were able to create some havoc on defense. Hopefully, we can build on this over the next week." His comments underscore a forward-looking strategy as the team prepares for their next challenge.

Looking ahead, the Rattlers are set to confront Trinidad State at CSU Pueblo on March 7, 2025. With their current season record standing at 4-24, the upcoming game presents an opportunity for the Rattlers to regroup and strive for a victory in the post-season games.
